Wanki Kim made a successful debut with a record of 11 minute range

The Korean marathon was revitalized with the emergence of a new star, Wanki Kim who first ran the full course and set a new Korean record of 2 hour and 11 minute range. Wanki Kim's new record became a catalyst for the struggle to set a better record and laid a foundation for the gold medal won by Youngjo Hwang in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

 

 

Yongjo Hwang made his first try to the full course and became the third winner

Youngjo Hwang was the focus of attention at the 62nd Game. He was the 3rd winner with a record of 2 hour and 12 minute range. He later became the champion of the Korean marathon in the 1990s as he won the gold medal at the Olympics and Asian Games.

 

 

 

Jaeryong Kim and Wanki Kim compete against each other for 1 second difference

At the 63rd Game, Jaeryong Kim and Wanki Kim finally succeeded in entering the 9 minute range with a record of 2 hours 9 minutes and 30 seconds and 2 hours 9 minutes and 31 seconds. Youngjo Hwang who had the best Korean record of 2 hours 8 minutes and 47 seconds and the two others flew to Barcelona in 1992, where Youngjo Hwang won the gold medal in the marathon. He was the second Korean runner to win the marathon in the Olympics.

Wanki Kim set a new record of the Dong-A Marathon in a new course in Kyung-ju

The Dong-A Marathon was held in Kyung-ju, the capital of the Shilla Dynasty. Wanki Kim won the first prize by setting a new record for the Game.

International event for runners around the world

At the 65th Game, a host of top-class marathoners were invited form 12 nations. Manuel Matias fro Portugal won the first prize with a record of 2 hours 8 minutes and 33 seconds and Wanki Kim set a new Korea record of 2 hours 8 minutes and 32 seconds.
